The Rangamati University of Science and Technology unit Chhatra Dal has issued a 48-hour ultimatum for the vice chancellor’s resignation over several allegations, locking his office.
In a press conference at the campus on Tuesday morning, university unit Jatiotabadi Chatra Dal Convenor Nasir Uddin Arnab and Member Secretary Jisan Ahmed announced their decision.
They alleged that VC Prof Md Atiar Rahman is rehabilitating the Awami League while patronising Jamaat-e-Islami and helping spread its politics across the university.
They also accused the VC of endorsing an unfair recruitment process that prioritises candidates from Jamaat and Islami Chhatra Shibir.
Hinting at Jamaat’s politics, the Chhatra Dal leaders alleged that “partisan influence” is being exerted in the teacher recruitment process and administrative activities.
They said the VC participated in events organised by Jamaat and Shibir, and was involved in financial irregularities, including the illegal appointment of a project director.
VC Atiar, however, denied the allegations and said: “I’ve not received any such allegations yet. I don’t know why they want me to resign.
“I am currently in Dhaka. I will try to find out the matter by talking to them when I return to the university.”
He suggested that the Chhatra Dal leaders pitch their demands systematically, instead of “going back to the old system”.
Chhatra Dal, the student wing of ruling BNP, warned of tougher protests if their demands are not met within the deadline.
