The Islami Chhatra Shibir has reasserted its recent dominance in student politics with a sweeping victory in the Rajshahi University Central Students’ Union (RUCSU) polls, handily winning the key posts of vice president (VP) and assistant general secretary (AGS).
Meanwhile, a candidate from the “Adhipatyabirodhi Oikya” won the general secretary (GS) race.
In yet another major setback, the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, the student wing of the BNP, failed to pose a significant challenge for any of the top three positions in the student council elections at the university.
Mostakur Rahman Zahid from the Shibir-backed “Sammilito Shikkharthi Jote” emerged victorious in the VP race, while SM Salman Sabbir from the same panel won the post of AGS. Adhipatyabirodhi Oikya's Salahuddin Ammar was elected GS of the student union.
In the contests for RUCSU top two positions, Shibir’s main challengers were the “Oikyabaddha Notun Projonmo” panel backed by the Chhatra Dal. Sheikh Nur Uddin Abir ran for VP from the panel, while Zahin Biswas Esha vied for the AGS post.
In the GS race, Shibir candidate Fazle Rabbi Md Fahim Reza mounted a strong bid but was ultimately defeated by Ammar.
Election officials announced the results at around 8:30am on Friday at the university’s Kazi Nazrul Islam Auditorium after voting ended the previous day without any untoward incidents or major disruptions.
Earlier, the RUCSU Election Commission had published results from the 17 individual hall unions.
According to the official tally, VP-elect Zahid secured 12,687 votes, while Chhatra Dal’s Abir received 3,397.
For the AGS post, Sabbir won 6,971 votes, pipping Esha, who polled 5,941.
In the GS race, Ammar bagged 11,537 votes, with Shibir’s Fahim Reza trailing at 5,729.
With this outcome, Islami Chhatra Shibir has maintained its winning streak in student union elections at several major universities, including Dhaka University (DUCSU), Jahangirnagar University (JUCSU), and Chittagong University (CUCSU).
The RUCSU polls were held in a festive atmosphere on the Rajshahi University campus on Thursday.
Polling began at 17 centres in nine buildings from 9am to 4pm.
A total of 28,901 voters were eligible to cast their ballots in the polls. Of them, 11,305 are women and 17,596 are men.
Three hundred and five candidates stood for the 23 posts in the RUCSU while 555 aspirants ran for the 255 posts in 17 hall unions and 58 contested the five Senate student representative seats.
At least 212 teachers and officials of the university served as presiding officers, assistant presiding officers and polling officers.
The last RUCSU vote was held in 1989, when Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, now the BNP's senior joint general secretary, was elected vice president and Ruhul Quddus Babu became general secretary.
After 35 years, Rajshahi University students have now elected their own representatives.
Recent student elections at Dhaka University, Jahangirnagar University, and Chittagong University have largely been seen as contests between Islami Chhatra Shibir -- the Jamaat-e-Islami’s student wing -- and Chhatra Dal. Shibir has secured decisive victories in all three of those polls.
SHIBIR BAGS 20 POSTS, CHHATRA DAL GETS 1
Shibir won a total of 20 posts in the RUCSU election. Of the remaining three positions, only one went to a candidate from the Chhatra Dal panel, with Nargis Khatun winning the sports secretary post.
Meanwhile, the post of science and technology secretary was won by independent candidate Tufail Ahmed Tufa, who serves as vice president of the Rajshahi University Science Club.
