Facing closure, Citycell signs deal with foreign investment firm to pay dues

Struggling Citycell says it has signed a deal with an investment firm to pay the dues to government and others.

The mobile-phone operator’s Head of Corporate Communications and Public Relations Taslim Ahmed told bdnews24.com on Wednesday that it was a foreign firm, but would not name it.

 

He hoped they would be able to settle the dues and ‘other issues’ with the money.

 

The government has ordered the Citycell to shut down for its failure to pay Tk 4.77 billion dues.

 

Earlier, its CEO Mehboob Chowdhury told bdnews24.com a US company had expressed eagerness to invest in the company.

 

After the biometric re-registration of SIM cards, Citycell has 100,000 to 150,000 subscribers, according to the BTRC.

 

Taking the decision to revoke Citycell’s licence, the government on Tuesday gave its customers seven days to switch to another operator.

 

On Wednesday, Citycell employees demonstrated in front of its Mohakhali office for payment of arrears and compensation.
