Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury has outlined the government's plans to bring people from all walks of life under QR code-based transactions as part of a push towards a cashless Bangladesh.
Transactions made through the system will carry no additional charge or fee, he said.
“Under this government initiative, any transaction made through a QR code will be completely free of charge, with no additional charges or fees,” Amir Khosru said.
He was speaking at the launch of Bangla QR code-based transaction services in Dhaka's Banani on Thursday, according to a finance ministry statement.
Khosru said the government wanted to expand QR-based digital financial services to fuchka vendors, rickshaw pullers, small traders and others who conduct everyday transactions.
“Under this system, everyone from ordinary people to pavement vendors and other small traders will be able to receive money very easily through QR codes into an account with any bank or service provider,” he said.
Wider use of the system will reduce the need to carry cash and make transactions easier and faster, according to the minister.
He acknowledged that there could be minor technical difficulties in the early stages but said they could be resolved quickly.
“Cashless transactions have already proved to be easy, secure and successful in many developed and rapidly growing economies around the world,” he said.
“Bangladesh Bank is also working to make this international practice universally available in the country.”
Transactions through Bangla QR have nearly doubled since its use was made mandatory for merchants following its launch on Jul 1.
Bangladesh Bank recently said about Tk 1.1 billion is now transacted through Bangla QR every day.
Businesses are now required to replace their previous QR codes with Bangla QR and display the new code for payments.
