Anis Ahmed has been named chairman of Eastern Bank (EBL).

In a media statement on Tuesday, the bank said its Board of Directors had unanimously elected him to the post.

Before becoming chairman, he served on the board's Executive Committee (EC) and earlier chaired the Risk Management Committee (RMC).

He is the founder and Group Chief Executive Officer of MGH Group, a Singapore-headquartered multinational conglomerate operating in 26 countries.

The group has operations spanning supply chain solutions for major fast fashion, e-commerce, automotive and electronics brands, private container terminals, Bangladesh's first foreign joint venture airline due to launch in 2026, distributorship of airline Global Distribution Systems, logistics, food and beverage retail, and financial services.

He is also the founder of the start-ups Obhai, a ride-sharing platform; Waadaa.Insure, an insurtech venture; and Jatra, an accommodation aggregation platform.

As per the press note, he has supported innovation and technology-driven enterprises in Bangladesh over the past decade.

"Today EBL has entered a new era of banking where the board will actively facilitate the ascension of women-led senior leadership, digital transformation, and become a daily lifestyle brand for our customers, built on EBL's rock-solid financial strengths," Ahmed was quoted as saying.

“Anis Ahmed’s gratitude to the July Revolution resulted in extending immediate support to 268 [July activist] through Suhana and the Anis Ahmed Foundation (SAAF),” the statement read.

It added that SAAF's preventive healthcare programmes for underprivileged meritorious students reached 10,000 beneficiaries in 2025, while its 31-bed Children's Haematology Ward at Bangladesh Medical University, formerly PG Hospital, has helped reduce mortality and increase complete remission rates.

The bank said “Ahmed's international business experience and strategic leadership are expected to further strengthen EBL's position as one of Bangladesh's leading financial institutions and support its long-term value creation for customers, shareholders and communities”.
