No irregularities in markets, 10 million animals likely to be sacrificed: livestock minister

He says prices this year are “satisfactory” for both buyers and sellers

Livestock Minister Md Amin Ur Rashid has given the Eid-ul-Azha livestock markets a clean bill of health, saying no irregularities or security concerns have emerged so far.

During a visit to the Neura Livestock Market in Cumilla city on Tuesday morning, he said the government has put all necessary measures in place to ensure safe transactions from marginal farmers through to buyers.

Cumilla City Corporation Administrator Yusuf Molla Tipu, District Livestock Officer Shamsul Islam, Cumilla Sadar Upazila BNP President Rezaul Qaiyum, General Secretary Shafiul Alam Raihan, and other officials accompanied him.

The minister said no illegally imported cattle have been spotted in the markets, and authorities have deployed veterinary teams to prevent counterfeit currency and curb extortion.

Law-enforcing agencies have also been stationed to ensure security.

Regarding the scale of this year's Eid, the minister said around 10 million animals are expected to be sacrificed nationwide.

"The Eid market has only just got going. The massive economic surge Eid-ul-Azha drives ultimately benefits the most marginal people across the country,” he said.

During his visit, the minister took to the veterinary team's microphone to announce that anyone facing issues while buying or selling cattle could get immediate help from the booth.

He also walked around the stalls to check in on buyers and sellers, adding that the current prices for both cows and goats are “fair and satisfying” for both sides.
