The European Union Chamber of Commerce in Bangladesh, or EuroCham, has begun its journey with a commitment to play a role in attracting more European investment as well as creating a model of good governance and sustainable growth.
The business coalition made its official debut on Tuesday at Dhaka’s Radisson Blu Water Garden Hotel in the presence of government and private-level representatives from across the sectors.
EuroCham Chairperson Nuria Lopez said at the inaugural ceremony that the chamber will focus on branding Bangladesh to attract more European investment.
Europe not only brings capital there but also a model of good governance and sustainable growth, she said, dubbing the chamber’s debut as a ‘new milestone’ in the EU-Bangladesh business relations.
In his speech as a chief guest of the event, chief advisor's special envoy on international affairs Lutfey Siddiqui said: “The interim administration is working to bring the government management on the right track in all sectors, including business and trade. The government wants all parties, including the business community, to give an accurate projection on the future course of Bangladesh.”
"We want to see the true projection of Bangladesh – positives and negatives, challenges and achievements – and how the journey was in the past, how it is now, and how it would be in the future."
At the event, the chamber says it will serve as a centre of excellence, promoting business relations between European investors and their counterparts in the country.
“It will facilitate dialogue between the private sector and key government stakeholders, such as the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority, or BIDA, the commerce ministry, and the National Board of Revenue, or NBR, to improve the ease-of-doing business in Bangladesh.”
EuroCham will advise European and Bangladeshi companies on the impact of upcoming EU legislation on their supply chains such as the corporate sustainability due diligence directive, textile strategy, circular economy, digital product passport, and ecodesign for sustainable products, the coalition said.
With a view to facilitating Bangladesh’s green and digital transition, EuroCham will offer a platform for sharing know-how, it added.
In his speech, EU Ambassador to Bangladesh Michael Miller said he would like to partner intensively with EuroCham to maximise trade and investment, explore more intensive B2B contacts, navigate the challenges of LDC graduation, and promote sustainable due diligence in supply chains, opening up the prospect of greater EU FDI and a more diversified Bangladeshi economy.
EuroCham Bangladesh will form part of the European Business Organisations, or EBO, Worldwide Network that represents European business interests in over 54 key global markets, the chamber said, adding that it caters to European multinationals, as well as micro, small, medium, and large enterprises.
