Amid an energy crunch after a floating LNG terminal in Moheshkhali was knocked out, the government has approved the purchase of eight cargoes of liquefied natural gas.
It will also import 5,000 tonnes of LPG to meet “emergency” demand and stabilise the market.
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approved the proposals in a meeting presided over by Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury on Thursday.
The Energy and Mineral Resources Division proposed four LNG purchases, with two cargoes each from the UK, Australia, Malaysia and Oman.
The purchases were approved without tenders under public procurement rules.
A fire at the Moheshkhali LNG terminal on Jul 21 caused technical damage, cutting daily gas supply to the national grid by around 450 million cubic feet.
One of the two floating storage and regasification units was shut for two weeks after cables carrying power, control and equipment data were damaged.
After repairs, limited gas supply resumed early Thursday from Excelerate Energy’s terminal following the restart of a boiler unit.
The Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase also approved the printing, binding and supply of free primary textbooks for 2027, along with Bangla and English textbooks for Class 6 and Class 7.
