Five districts face very heavy rain as landslides loom

The hills could be in for a rough spell, with torrential rain threatening five southeastern districts as a land depression bears down from Myanmar and the Bay of Bengal.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) warned on Tuesday that Cox’s Bazar, Bandarban, Rangamati, Khagrachhari and Chattogram could see heavy to very heavy rain, raising the risk of landslides in hilly areas.

The Met Office said the five districts could receive heavy to very heavy rain in places during the 48 hours from 6pm Tuesday, potentially causing temporary waterlogging and landslides.

In another bulletin, it said the depression had moved north-northwest and was over Myanmar and the adjoining northeastern Bay at 6pm Tuesday.

It could continue north-northwest before gradually weakening.

The system may bring gusty winds to Chattogram and Cox’s Bazar ports, parts of the Bay and nearby coastal areas. The two ports have been told to keep hoisting local warning signal No. 3.

Fishing boats and trawlers in the North Bay have been advised to remain close to shore and operate cautiously until further notice.
