Dhaka, Sept 5 (bdnews24.com)—A senior US diplomat in Dhaka in 2009 labelled Bengali daily Prothom Alo as "a generally neutral and pro-US vernacular daily".
While explaining to Washington reactions in Bangladesh media over US president Barack Obama's winning the Nobel Peace prize in a cable on Oct 14, 2009, Dhaka's Chargé d'Affaires Nicholas Dean had also named The Daily Independent and Daily Ittefaq as pro-American.
He, however, had said English Daily New Age was opposed to the US.
Bengali dailies Daily Samakal and Daily Janakantha were mentioned by Dean as pro-Awami League and pro-West, while Inqilab an anti-West Bengali daily.
The US diplomat had observed that Bengali daily Amar Desh and English broadsheet New Nation were pro-BNP and vernacular newspaper Naya Diganta biased towards the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami. Jai Jai Din was labelled as a government-leaning daily.
