A Tangail court has sentenced three people to death and four others to life in prison for the murder of Rafiqul Islam Faruk Hossain, a former chairman of the Dainu Union council in Tangail Sadar Upazila.
Tangail Additional Sessions Judge Md Faysal Al Mamun delivered the verdict in the presence of the convicts on Monday afternoon, said Additional Public Prosecutor Mohammad Saidur Rahman Swapon.
Former Chhatra League central vice president Saniat Khan Bappa is among the death penalty recipients.
Rafiqul was shot and hacked to death on Dec 20, 2013, said APP Swapon.
He said Rafiqul lived in a rented house in the town’s Akurtakur Para area. Around 6:30am that day, Rafiqul went for a walk. He was attacked by a group of men when he reached the Bottola Bazar area.
The attackers killed Rafiqul and fled. Police recovered the body when the incident was reported.
The following day, Rafiqul’s younger brother Lavlu Mia filed a murder case with the Sadar Police Station, Swapon said. The Detective Branch (DB) was later tasked with the investigation.
After hearing the testimony of witnesses, the court sentenced three suspects to death and fined them Tk 100,000 each. It also sentenced four to life in prison and fined them Tk 50,000. A failure to pay the fine will lead to another year in prison, APP Swapon said.
