Teaching should be a career of first choice, not a fallback for those with nowhere else to turn, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has said, pledging to strengthen teachers’ financial security and status.
He made the remarks at a discussion marking World Teachers’ Day 2026 in Dhaka on Monday, where he outlined why the profession must attract the country’s brightest minds.
“Teaching can never be a last resort or just another job. Rather, the government is reshaping teacher recruitment and the education system so that the most talented people in education become interested in choosing teaching as their first priority in their careers,” he said.
The premier said the government believed teachers’ dignity was closely tied to the dignity and image of the state.
“Because we believe the honour and dignity of the state are linked to the respect accorded to teachers in the state and society. If teachers retain their dignity in society, the country’s image is enhanced.”
More than 100 distinguished teachers from universities, colleges and schools were honoured at the event. Each received Tk 200,000, a crest and a certificate of recognition.
The recipients included 10 primary-level teachers, 20 secondary-level teachers, 25 college teachers, 20 teachers from general universities, 10 from medical colleges and universities, three from agricultural universities, three from engineering universities and four from other specialised universities.
Seven teachers selected by the prime minister were also honoured.
World Teachers’ Day is observed globally on Oct 5 each year to highlight teachers’ dignity, rights and professional development, as well as the importance of ensuring quality education.
