The president's office sent a letter to the Cabinet Division, asking it to set up a six-member search panel on Wednesday.
The president's press secretary Joynal Abedin confirmed the size of the committee to bdnews24.com.
Bangabhaban and Cabinet Division officials were unwilling to discuss the names before they are announced in a government circular.
The order will be issued following approval by the prime minister and president, said Cabinet Secretary Md Shafiul Alam.
A justice of the Appellate Division will head the committee as before. The panel will also have a justice from the High Court Division.
The Cabinet secretary met Law Minister Anisul Huq after receiving Bangabhaban's list. They then went to the Supreme Court for a meeting with Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha.
According to an official, Bangladesh Public Service Commission Chairman Dr Muhammed Sadique and Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) Masud Ahmed were in the committee.
Syed Manzoorul Islam, professor of English at Dhaka University and Chittagong University Pro-Vice-Chancellor Shireen Akhter were also in the panel, he told bdnews24.com.
The search committee that advised the late former president Zillur Rahman on setting up the current Election Commission had four members.
That committee headed by Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain suggested two names for chief election commissioner and eights names for election commissioners.
Former civil servant Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad was later chosen as the chief election commissioner and Abdul Mobarak, Abu Hafiz, Brig Gen (retd) Md Zabed Ali and Md Shah Nawaz as commissioners.
The current Election Commission’s term will end in February.
