Bangladesh's first war crimes tribunal on Monday found the former Jamaat-e-Islami and Awami League leader guilty of two out of five charges levelled against him.

Mobarak Hossain was handed down death sentence for killing the 33 on the bank of Akhaurha's Gangasagar Dighi and received life imprisonment for the abduction and murder of one Abdul Khalek, who had assisted the freedom fighters.

However, he was acquitted of three other charges.

The verdict said it had been proven that the convict was affiliated with collaborators of Pakistan occupation army and that he was known in his locality for his notorious role during the war.

Hossain was a Jamaat activist after the war but joined the local Awami League later. He became Akhaurha's Morgrha Union Awami League unit general secretary but was expelled from the party three years ago.

He was indicted on Apr 23 last year on five charges of crimes against humanity.

As per law, he has 30 days to challenge the verdict.
