Advisory: Updates with VC's announcement of resignation.
Sylhet, May 14 (BDNEWS) – A student of the Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) succumbed to his injuries Sunday morning at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka.
The victim, Mosharraf Hossain Shamim, was a BBA student of the university.
Students of SUST turned furious as the news of Shamim's death spread.
They held protest rally in front of the residence of VC demanding his ouster.
Other chapter of protesters gathered in VC office premises. During that time they demanded resignation of ASP Gias who ordered firing on the processionists.
At 12.35 pm VC's resignation paper was handed over to the agitated students. The protesters themselves faxed the paper to the offices of President who is also the Chancellor of the university and to the Education minister.
Shamim received bullet injuries when police opened fire to disperse rioting students of the SUST and neighbouring Jalalabad Ragib-Rabeya Medical College (JRRMC) in Sylhet on Friday night.
At least 40 students were also injured in the incident.
Seriously injured Shamim, Rajib and Niloy were sent to Dhaka for better treatment.
Meanwhile, 36 bags of blood have been transfused to Rajib Kumar Bashak till Saturday night, yet doctors stated his condition to be critical. One of his kidneys was amputated.
SUST Vice Chancellor Dr Mosleh Uddin Ahmed Tarek, meanwhile, announced his resignation.
The authorities of SUST and JRRMC Saturday declared both the institutes closed sine-die following overnight clashes between students of the two institutions.
