The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has ordered notices to be published in newspapers asking 34 suspects, including former Rajshahi mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton, to surrender in a crimes against humanity case over incidents during the July 2024 mass uprising.

The ICT-2 bench, headed by Justice Nozrul Islam Chowdhury, issued the order on Thursday.

The Chief Prosecutor's Office said the tribunal had instructed its registrar's office to publish the notices.

The order came after the tribunal reviewed a report on efforts to execute arrest warrants previously issued against the 34 suspects.

Prosecutor Mohammad Zahirul Amin presented the report to the tribunal.

During the hearing, he said arrest warrants had been issued against the 34 suspects on Aug 18, but law enforcers could not find them at their permanent or temporary addresses.

As a result, the warrants could not be executed and law-enforcing agencies submitted non-execution reports.

“As the suspects have gone into hiding, notices can be published in two national newspapers asking them to appear before the tribunal or surrender,” the prosecutor said.

The tribunal fixed Oct 27 for the next hearing and directed the registrar's office to publish the notices.

On Aug 18, the tribunal accepted the formal charges against 38 suspects and issued arrest warrants against 34 of them.

The four suspects already in custody are former Rajshahi-3 MP Mohammad Asaduzzaman Asad, Rajshahi Metropolitan Awami League General Secretary Dablu Sarkar, Zahirul Islam Rubel and Mohaiminul Islam Manik.

They were produced before the tribunal on Wednesday.

According to the prosecution, protester Raihan Ali was shot dead in front of Labanga Restaurant opposite Shesher Chowk Swachchho Tower at Rajshahi's Boalia on the afternoon of Aug 5, 2024.

Around the same time, Anjum Sakib was killed in front of Shah Makhdum College, while Salman, also known as Shimul, and several others were injured in the attacks, the prosecution says.
