Bangladesh security forces have also detained 75 Rohingya refugees, including women and children, when they were trying to cross the border into Bangladesh.
Locals recovered the bodies from the river in Cox’s Bazar’s Teknaf on Thursday and handed them over to police, said local police chief Md Mainuddin Khan.
All of the victims are members of Myanmar’s Rohingya minority, he said. Nine women and 10 children were among the dead.
Shabrang Union Ward-7 UP member Nurul Amin said a boat carrying the Rohingyas was attempting to cross the border into Bangladesh in the Shahparirdwip area on Thursday when it capsized.
“Locals saw the bodies floating in the river and brought them to shore. They then contacted the police.”
