Police recovered the body after breaking the door to a room at the Hotel Olio Dream Haven on Panthapath, said Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station Inspector Abul Kalam Azad.

Police have yet to confirm the cause of death of the 70-year-old.

Hossain was the cinematographer on ‘Surja Dighal Bari’, ‘Emiler Goenda Bahini’, ‘Lalsalu’ and several other beloved films and was the recipient of five National Film Awards. His work is said to have ushered in a new era in Bangladeshi cinema.

Anwar Hossain was born on Oct 6, 1948 in Old Dhaka. He lived for over two decades in France. Though he received a French passport, he returned to Bangladesh a few years ago and began living in Shariatpur.

He had come to Dhaka for an event on Nov 28 and had been staying at the Hotel Olio.

Drik General Manager ASM Rezaur Rahman told bdnews24.com that two employees had been sent to bring Hossain from the hotel for the event and found his door locked. After knocking on the door and calling him for some time they informed the hotel authorities. Police were called and eventually entered the room by breaking the door.

Anwar Hossain was found dead inside.

Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station Deputy Inspector Tofazzal Hossain told bdnews24.com:

“Anwar Hossain was staying in room 809 of the hotel. He was found dead on the bed.”
