Two men have robbed a rickshaw passenger at knifepoint in Chattogram’s Patharghata, with footage of the incident doing the rounds on social media.
The video shows one of the robbers cutting open the passenger’s trouser pocket with a knife and taking something from inside.
The robbery took place on Satish Babu Lane, a short distance from Kotwali Police Station, although it was not immediately clear when.
The footage began circulating on Saturday morning.
Chattogram Metropolitan Police Assistant Commissioner (Kotwali) Khairul Bashar said police were working to arrest those involved.
What the Video Shows
At the start of the footage, a battery-powered rickshaw apparently used by the two men can be seen waiting a short distance away.
The pair are seen confronting a passenger in another, pedal-powered rickshaw and trying to take items from his pockets.
“I’m giving it to you, I’m giving it to you. Come on, brother, I’m giving it to you,” the passenger can be heard saying.
The two men, one wearing a white T-shirt and the other a blue shirt, are seen taking items from the passenger’s pockets. Both appear to be carrying knives.
When the passenger takes time to hand over something from his trouser pocket, the man in the blue shirt tries to pull it out by force.
After he fails, the man in the white T-shirt begins cutting open the passenger’s trouser pocket with his knife. He is then seen taking something from the pocket.
The man in the blue shirt then gets into the battery-powered rickshaw waiting nearby as people in surrounding buildings can be heard raising the alarm.
Both men eventually flee in the rickshaw as local residents shout “Thief! Thief!” and “Catch them!” and give chase.
The passenger is later seen picking something up from the road.
Police to Provide Details Later
Asked about the incident, Bashar told bdnews24.com: “The incident you are referring to has also come to our attention. It was unfortunate.
“Our team is working to arrest those involved. We hope to have a positive update. Until then, I do not want to say anything more. We will provide all the information together.”
Local residents said there had recently been several mugging incidents around dawn on Satish Babu Lane.
Police also said several mobile phones had recently been snatched around Kotwali and New Market intersections in the evenings and at night.
