Road crashes killed 14 people a day in September: Road Safety Foundation

As many as 423 people were killed and 674 injured in 442 road accidents during the month, a report says

An average of 14 people died in road crashes across Bangladesh every day in September, according to a report by the Road Safety Foundation.

The organisation recorded 423 deaths and 674 injuries in 442 road crashes during the month. At the same time, 16 people were killed and four went missing in 11 boat accidents. In addition, 19 people were killed in 23 rail accidents.

The data emerged from the Road Safety Foundation's September road accident monitoring report on transport accidents.

The organisation prepared the report based on information from nine national dailies, 17 national and regional online news portals, a number of electronic media outlets, and its own data.

The report says 61 of the dead were children, 73 were women, while the rest were men. Accidents involving motorcycles were the highest in terms of single vehicles.

A total of 139 people were killed in 154 motorcycle accidents across the country, accounting for about 32.86 percent of the total fatalities.

Another 106 pedestrians were killed in the accidents, which accounts for another 25.05 percent of total fatalities. In addition, 53 drivers and assistants of vehicles were killed, making up 12.52 percent.

According to the division-wise accident statistics, Dhaka Division saw the most accidents and the most fatalities. This division accounted for 29.86 percent of total accidents and 31.67 percent of the fatalities, with 132 accidents resulting in 134 deaths. On the other hand, the lowest number of accidents was in Sylhet, which saw 20 accidents resulting in 21 deaths.

As a single district, Gazipur recorded the highest number of deaths, with 38. In addition, 21 deaths and 47 injuries were reported in 52 accidents in the capital Dhaka.

Among other divisions, 10.87 percent of fatalities occurred in Rajshahi, 17.77 percent in Chattogram, 14.42 percent in Khulna, 6.61 percent in Barishal, 4.96 percent in Sylhet, 5.91 percent in Rangpur and 7.80 percent in Mymensingh.

The organisation said that 145 of the accidents occurred on national highways, 178 on regional roads, 56 on rural roads and 63 on city roads.

It said that most of the accidents in September occurred due to speeding and vehicles veering out of control.
