Noted sportsman MA Hamid dies at 76

Noted sports personality Lt Col (retd) MA Hamid died at Dhaka Combined Military Hospital Friday evening, aged 76.

Dhaka, July 25 (bdnews24.com) - Noted sports personality Lt Col (retd) MA Hamid died at Dhaka Combined Military Hospital Friday evening, aged 76.
Hamid's elder son Kaiser Hamid told bdnews24.com: "Dad was suffering from kidney disease. He died while under treatment at CMH."
He said his father's first
namaz-e-janaza
would be held at the handball field beside Bangabandhu National Stadium at 11am Saturday.
MA Hamid was founder of the Bangladesh Handball Federation and a former vice chairman of the National Sports Council. The retired lieutenant colonel was also president of the Army Sports Control Board.
Hamid, who received numerous sports awards including the National Sports Award, has also left behind a sporting family.
His wife Rani Hamid is a women's chess International Master and earned many laurels for the country.
His elder son Kaiser Hamid was captain of the national football team for many years, while second son Sohel Hamid was national squash champion. The youngest son Bobby Hamid is a keen football player.
As well as his wife and three sons, Hamid left behind daughter Jabin Hamid and a host of well wishers.
When the news of his death spread a pall of gloom descended on the sports world. Sports figures thronged his DOHS house.
President of the Bangladesh Olympic Association and army chief General Moeen U Ahmed and BOA secretary general Kutubuddin Ahmed in a message expressed deep condolences to the bereaved family.
Bangladesh Handball Federation president Md Nurul Amin, general secretary Asaduzzaman Kohinoor, executive committee members, players, officials, referees and employees all expressed deep condolences.
