Dhaka, Dec 11 (BDNEWS) – The High Court Sunday quashed the proceedings of a defamation case filed by the Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) authorities against four journalists, including the editor, of the Dainik Azadi, a local daily newspaper published from the port city of Chittagong.
After hearing a petition filed by the accused journalists, a division bench of the High Court comprising Justice Mir Hasmat Ali and Justice ABM Hatem Ali passed the judgment.
On May 10, 2001, the Dainik Azadi had published a news item titled as " Damage of Peoples' Tax Money in the Name of Digging Chaktai Canal".
Chief executive officer of the CCC Abdul Wahab, on behalf of the CCC, had filed a defamation case with Chittagong Metropolitan Magistrate court, on May 15, against managing editor of the daily MA Malek, its former editor late Mohammad Khaled, news editor Sadhan Kumar Dhar and senior staff reporter Helauddin Chowdhury for publishing the news item.
The accused, in 2001, surrendered before the trial court and obtained bail. They also filed a quashment petition in the High Court.
Barrister Sheikh Hasan Arif moved for the petitioners before the court while advocate Mokbul Ahmed for the CCC authorities.
