Nahid Hossain Molla, chairman of Hamidpur union in Kalia Upazila, was shot dead around 4am Friday while he was asleep at his home in Charmachandapur village, police said.
"He was taken to the Khulna Medical College Hospital where the doctors declared him dead," said Kalia police OC Shamsher Ali.
Additional police personnel has been deployed in Hamidpur following the incident, he said.
Nahid joined the Awami League more than a year ago. Prior that, he was involved with the BNP, said Nahid's nephew Thanda Molla.
The 50-year-old was elected chairman in Hamidpur union council elections last year, after contesting the election as an independent candidate.
