The dead have been identified as Gani Mia, 45, his wife ‘Tajirun’, 38, their son ‘Tajel’ (a college student), 17, and their 9-year-old daughter ‘Sadia’.
Local residents informed the police after recovering the bodies from a house in the Master Para neighbourhood at Palli Bidyut Road around 9am Friday, said Police Superintendent Sanjit Kumar Roy.
“An axe, believed to have been used for the murders, has been recovered from the scene,” he said.
Police have started an investigation into the incident.
According to the locals, the incident took place about two or three days ago as the house was locked over the past two days.
Gani’s mother-in-law came to visit them on Friday and called the neighbours after finding it locked from outside. The locals broke into the house and found them dead.
Police cordoned the house around 9:30am. The Police Bureau of Investigation or PBI and Criminal Investigation Department or CID officials visited the scene afterwards.
Superintendent of Police Sanjit Kumar Roy visited the scene in the afternoon, said Kamran Hossain, ASP of Tangail's Madhupur circle.
