The owner of an animal care centre in Dhaka’s Gulshan and two veterinarians have been served a legal notice over allegations that negligence and improper treatment led to the death of a pregnant Persian cat.
Lawyer Mohammad Zahidur Rahman sent the notice by registered post on Thursday on behalf of the cat’s owner Abibur Rahman.
The notice gives Bangladesh Animal Care Centre (BACC) owner Zubaida M Labanna seven days to take legal action against veterinarians Solaiman Hossain and Md Jubayer Ahmed.
If no action is taken, Abibur will pursue legal proceedings against all three, according to the notice.
“The notice asks [BACC] owner Labanna to take legal action within seven days against the two doctors held responsible for the death of the pregnant Persian cat due to negligence and improper treatment,” Zahidur told bdnews24.com.
“If no action is taken, legal proceedings will be initiated against all three people who have been served the notice.”
What Happened to the Cat
According to the notice, Abibur had been taking the cat to BACC for treatment since it was born on May 1, 2020.
He took it to the centre on Sept 5 to determine whether it was pregnant. Solaiman examined the cat, confirmed the pregnancy and said it was carrying two or more kittens before prescribing medication.
On the morning of Sept 13, the cat began breathing rapidly and developed a runny nose and watery eyes. It also showed little interest in eating or moving, the notice says.
Abibur contacted BACC on WhatsApp around noon to report the symptoms, but alleges that the centre took no action.
That evening, he sent videos and voice messages seeking emergency treatment.
Around 8:30pm, Jubayer assessed the cat over a video call.
According to the notice, he told Abibur: “It’s nothing serious. She is going to give birth. Put some clothes beside her, make the room dark and she will deliver the kittens.”
Abibur said he followed the advice, but the cat’s condition continued to deteriorate.
At 10:53pm, he sent another video and called the centre. On a veterinarian’s advice, he took the cat to BACC around 11:30pm.
The notice says Dr Shiropa gave the cat oxygen, which improved its breathing, and administered an injection. The cat, which had been lying down, was then able to stand.
A few minutes later, Jubayer took the cat inside without oxygen, according to the notice.
Four to five minutes later, Shiropa returned and said the cat was dying. Abibur subsequently saw the cat die in Jubayer’s presence, the notice says.
The notice alleges that the cat died because Jubayer began further treatment without keeping it under observation for half an hour after the injection.
Owner Accused of Inaction
Abibur returned to BACC on Sept 18 and asked owner Labanna to take action over the incident.
The notice alleges that Labanna acknowledged negligence and improper treatment but refused to take action against the two veterinarians.
