Two die, 70 hospitalised with dengue fever in a day

Two more people have died of dengue while 70 new patients have been hospitalised with the Aedes mosquito-borne disease across Bangladesh over the past 24 hours.

The number of patients hospitalised with the disease this year has risen to 357.

The total number of deaths from the illness now stands at 3.

The Directorate General of Health Services, or DGHS, said as many as 25 new patients were hospitalised in the Dhaka metropolitan area until Monday.

In addition, 14 were hospitalised in the Dhaka Division, three in the Mymensingh Division, 10 in the Chattogram Division, five in the Khulna Division, two in the Rajshahi Division, eight in the Barishal Division, and three in the Sylhet Division.

As many as 400 patients are currently undergoing treatment for dengue in hospitals across the country. Of them, 202 are hospitalised in the capital and 198 are outside Dhaka.

In 2024, a total of 101,214 patients were hospitalised due to dengue nationwide, with 575 fatalities reported.

This marks the third-highest number of hospitalisations due to dengue in the country’s history, while the death toll ranks as the second-highest.

The DGHS has been keeping records of dengue hospitalisations and fatalities since 2000.

Since then, a record 321,179 dengue hospitalisations were logged in 2023. That year also saw the most deaths with 1,705.
