End open-air Bengali New Year celebrations by 5pm: Police

Police have asked the people to end all the outdoor Bengali New Year celebrations in Dhaka and Chittagong by 5pm.

Bangladesh and all Bengalis across the world will celebrate the new Bengali year on Tuesday, the first day of Bengali month of Baishakh.
 
A long string of simultaneous festivities are already planned at the capital’s Ramna Batamul, Dhaka University campus, Faculty of Fine Arts, Suhrawardy Udyan, Rabindra Sarobor and many other hot spots.
 
The port city’s DC Hill, CRB area, Foy’s Lake, Patenga Sea Beach, Shilpakala Academy and other areas will also welcome the new year with much celebrations.
 
State Minister for Home Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal on Monday said, “No programme on open locations after 5:30pm will be allowed for security reasons.”
 
Ramna and other major areas in Dhaka would be under total security blanket on Tuesday, he said.
 
He inspected the security measures at Ramna Batamul flanked by top police officials including Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia.
 
Chittagong Metropolitan Police in a statement also issued the same order.
 
The people were asked in the statement to not continue any large event out in the open without permission after 5pm.
 
CMP’s Additional Deputy Commissioner SM Tanvir Arafat told bdnews24.com that additional police force and mobile teams would work to ensure public safety during Pahela Baishakh celebrations.
 
Fireworks during any programme have also been banned.
 
Police also asked those who have licensed weapons not to carry their firearms at the celebration venues.
