A tender box has been looted after a hand bomb was detonated during a violent clash between two groups over the rightsto collect rent from a market in Rajshahi’s Paba Upazila.
A man was stabbed and injured amid the mayhem, which occurred in the Naodapara area on Monday afternoon, according to Masuma Mostarin, chief of Shah Makhdum Police Station
The injured, 42-year-old Shakilur Rahman Ron, a resident of the Firozabad area of Chandrima Thana. He was rushed to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital for treatment.
Citing witnesses, police said the Upazila administration had issued a notice for the lease of 12 markets in Paba for the Bengali year 1432. Monday marked the final day for submissions of tenders.
Tensions escalated between two competing groups over the tender process, ultimately leading to a violent clash. During the altercation, the groups seized the tender box and removed the submitted bids.
Upon receiving reports of the incident, police arrived at the scene to find the tender box discarded in front of the office of the Upazila Executive Officer.
One side of the box was open, and all the tenders had been stolen. Authorities also noted signs of multiple hand grenade blasts at the location.
Dr Shankar K Biswas, a spokesman for the emergency department at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, confirmed that Shakilur was brought to the facility around 1pm.
“He was later admitted to Ward No. 4. He sustained a stab wound to the lower abdomen. He is currently under observation,” said Biswas.
In the wake of the incident, OC Masuma stated that additional police and military personnel had been deployed to the area. An investigation is currently underway to identify those responsible, with authorities reviewing CCTV footage in an effort to gather evidence. Legal action will be pursued against all individuals involved.
