A young couple has been killed in a motorcycle accident in Dhaka's Uttara, according to police.
The victims were identified as Abdus Rahman Rabbi, 25, and his wife Karima Akter Mim, 20.
The accident occurred around 1:30am on Tuesday in front of the BNS Center.
Rabbi's friend Muntasir Mahmud Manik and his wife, who rushed the couple to the hospital, said they found them in critical condition. The couple was taken to the emergency department at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, or DMCH, around 2:45am, where Mim was declared dead. After initial treatment, Rabbi was transferred to National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation and later to the Neurosciences Hospital.
He was brought back to DMCH around 6:45am, where he was also declared dead.
Muntasir's wife Tanzila, identified by a single name, said that Monday was her husband’s birthday. Rabbi and Mim had come to their house to celebrate. After the celebration, they went out for dinner on two motorcycles.
Tanzila and Manik had gone ahead, and when they called Rabbi’s number, a police officer answered and informed them that they had found the couple lying on the road. They were immediately taken to the hospital.
Rabbi had been living in the Tongi College Gate area. He had completed his studies and was planning to go abroad, according to Tanzila.
“We found them lying on the road, still alive. Our patrol team made every effort to save them. They were quickly taken to the hospital but unfortunately passed away,” said Uttara East Police Station chief Shamim Ahmed.
Regarding the cause of the accident, Shamim said, "We are investigating whether they lost control of their vehicle or if another vehicle was involved."
The bodies have been sent to the DMCH morgue for autopsy.
