Plunged into despair by crushing debts and his inability to support his family, 27-year-old Mithun Das wept and begged his parents for forgiveness on a Facebook livestream, saying he would “kill himself". A few hours later, he was found on a rail line in Chattogram's Sitakunda.
The mutilated body was recovered from the Dhaka–Chattogram rail line in the Moulovipara area of Sitakunda Upazila's municipal headquarters on Tuesday night, according to police. Mithun was the son of Premananda Das from Cumilla's Daudkandi Upazila.
Sitakunda Railway Outpost Assistant Sub-Inspector Rashed Rana said that Mithun's body was recovered from the Chattogram-bound line in Moulvipara. “We believe that he killed himself by jumping under a freight train headed to Chattogram around 8:30pm,” said Rashed.
“In a livestream on Facebook before his death, he spoke about his debts and also wrote several other posts,” he added.
Mithun’s parents, wife and relatives collected the body in the morning. At their request it was handed over without a post-mortem, according to the officer.
Citing the family, ASI Rashed said Mithun worked for a pharmaceutical company based in Daudkandi. On Tuesday, he left home saying he would visit a temple in Sitakunda.
Two minutes before his death, Mithun went live on Facebook from an account under the name MK Mithun. In the 2-and-a-half-minute livestream, he broke down in tears and spoke candidly about the pressures he was under.
“I never thought I'd make such a decision. It wouldn’t have been a big loss had I taken this decision earlier. No one is responsible for my death. I haven't been able to evade my troubles since last December. Even Goddess Lakshmi has deserted me.”
During the livestream, he spoke of debts, his company losing money and his fears that “no one would believe” him. He said he intended to use company funds to repay some loans.
He appealed directly to lenders and to his family in the broadcast.
“No one is there to look after my family. But how can I face my parents? I’m leaving… Those I owe money, please forgive me. I can’t see my family ruined.”
He also spoke of his wife and children, urging his lenders not to press his family for money and asking his wife to remarry.
“I couldn’t be a good husband, or a good son or good brother… Mother and Father, please forgive me."
Before the livestream, Mithun posted two statuses on Facebook.
In one he requested that no funeral be arranged for him. In the other, he wrote about being indebted, losing money and getting a job.
