Encroachment on footpaths and commissioning of several garment factories seemed to have impacted on its sewer system.

Many areas of Mirpur were submerged after 30 minutes of heavy rain on Thursday evening.

The Sangbadik Abasan (Journalist Residential Area) stretch between Kalshi and Bihari Camp Area under Mirpur-11 and Purabi-Kalshi road suffered the worst, with those returning from office having to wade through waist-high water.

Sewerage channels on the Purabi-Kalshi road, renovated by the armed forces after a year's effort, were clearly clogged.

Syed Sabbir Akhter Shubha of Journalist Residential Area says, “Flooding is a regular phenomenon here but it is worse this time. I have never seen waist-high water after half-an-hour rainfall.”

Shubha, who has been living in the area for six years, says waist-high water in front of the Journalist Residential Area means chest-high water behind the area.

“Elders in the area have taken up the issue with the local councillors but to no avail," he said.

“I don’t think there is anyone to look after (us).”

Garment worker Tazrin Sultana says the workers regularly have to wait for the water to go down, when they return home from work.

“Water from the drain and the rainwater flood the area. The body itches even after washing with soap,” she says.

Sazzad Hossain, owner of an IT company, says inundation is the main problem of Mirpur-11, Pallabi Extension and Kalshi areas.

He thinks the lack of proper planning is responsible for the people’s sufferings.
