One of 30 Bangladeshi workers who were allegedly sent to Russia with promises of jobs before being forced to fight in the war in Ukraine is on his way home after being rescued.

Rajon Hossain left Moscow on Friday night after completing immigration formalities, according to Mohammad Mizanur Rahman, first secretary (labour) at the Bangladesh Embassy in the Russian capital.

“His repatriation was confirmed after his immigration clearance was completed,” Mizanur said.

He added that the entire process following Rajon’s rescue had been handled under the embassy’s supervision.

Rajon is travelling on an Ethiopian Airlines flight via Addis Ababa and is scheduled to arrive at Dhaka’s Shahjalal International Airport at 9:50am on Sunday, the embassy said.

Rajon runs a Facebook page called “Rajon on the Go - Bangla”, where he has shared photographs and videos from the war.

He was injured while fighting and had been trying for some time to leave the battlefield.

The case is linked to a group of 30 Bangladeshi workers sent to Russia on Apr 24 by three recruiting agencies after receiving manpower clearance from the Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Training (BMET).

The workers were allegedly promised jobs but were later forced to take part in the war in Ukraine.

Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Ariful Haque Choudhury told parliament on Jul 9 that the government had received reports of four deaths among the group.

Authorities revoked the licences of RS International, Jabal-E-Noor and TS Overseas Limited on Jun 1 over allegations of fraud and confiscated their security deposits.
