UN General Assembly adopts Bangladesh-led Culture of Peace resolution

The resolution reaffirms commitment to dialogue, tolerance, solidarity, and peaceful coexistence

The United Nations General Assembly has adopted Bangladesh's flagship peace resolution reaffirming the global community's commitment to dialogue, tolerance, solidarity and peaceful coexistence.

The resolution, titled "Follow-up to the Declaration and Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace", was adopted by the 193-member assembly, the Permanent Mission of Bangladesh to the United Nations in New York said in a media statement.

Introducing the resolution, Bangladesh's Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Salahuddin Noman Chowdhury, said “building peaceful, inclusive and resilient societies required sustained dialogue, mutual understanding, respect for diversity, and steady adherence to the principles of the UN Charter”.

He also thanked member states for their constructive engagement and broad support, calling for renewed collective efforts to promote “dialogue over division, cooperation over conflict and understanding over intolerance”.

First tabled in 1999 at Bangladesh's initiative, the resolution has since served as the UN's principal framework for advancing a culture of peace.

“It promotes the values of respect for diversity, tolerance, solidarity and non-violence while reinforcing international efforts to prevent conflict, foster peaceful coexistence and strengthen multilateral cooperation,” the statement read.
