A mother has died just hours after learning of the death of her son, a former Union Parishad chairman and Awami League leader, in Kishoreganj's Katiadi.
Altaf Uddin Shahin, 53, died around 2am on Saturday at a hospital in Gazipur.
Upon hearing the news at their family home, his mother Jubaida Moni, 80, passed away at around 6am on Sunday, said Aminul Islam Mohorom, chairman of the Shahasram Dhuldia Union Parishad.
Shahin was a former chairman of the Union Parishad and a former general secretary of the local Awami League unit.
Family members believe Zubaida died from the shock of losing her son.
"My mother had been ill for a long time. She loved my brother deeply. She could not bear the grief," said Mostafa Kamal, Shahin's younger brother.
Aminul said Shahin served as chairman of the Union Parishad from 2009 to 2015.
He received a gold medal in 2014 in recognition of his contributions while in office.
He said Shahin had been living in Gazipur and would visit his mother whenever he had the opportunity.
"On Saturday night, he suddenly felt chest pain and was taken to a hospital in Gazipur, where he died while undergoing treatment," Aminul said.
