Two people have been killed and another injured after a shootout in a house in Khulna’s Rupsha Upazila. Police claim the homeowner and the casualties all have connections to drug trafficking and are accused in several cases.
The incident occurred in the Rajapur Popular area of the Upazila’s Aichgati Union around 9pm on Thursday, according to Mohammad Mahfuzur Rahman, chief of Rupsha Police Station.
The dead have been identified as Sabbir Sheikh, 27, and Saddam. Sabbir hailed from Khulna city’s Sheikhpara, while Saddam hailed from the Sonadanga Thana area of the city.
The injured was identified as Miraj, aka “Kawwa Miraj”. Police were unable to give details of his identity. Miraj was admitted to a private hospital but was able to flee after threatening people with a weapon.
OC Mahfuzur said that a group of five to seven armed men attacked the home of Shohag, a top drug trader in the Rajapur Popular area, around 9pm on Thursday. Sabbir, Saddam, and many others were there.
A shootout began between the two sides. Sabbir was shot through the back of the head and the bullet came out through one eye, killing him on the spot. Saddam, who also suffered a bullet wound to the head, was sent from Khulna Medical College Hospital to Dhaka in critical condition and died on the way.
The OC said that when the police went to the spot after receiving a tip-off, they recovered four bullets, six bullet shells, some yaba, drug paraphernalia and a grenade-like object from the scene.
He added that the deceased and the injured were members of Khulna's notorious drug syndicate “B Company”. The deceased Sabbir and the absconding Miraj are allegedly close to the head of the syndicate “Grenade Babu”.
Mahfuzur also said that the bodies of the deceased have been sent to Khulna Medical College Hospital for autopsy.
Khulna District Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Md Anisuzzaman said that a youth named Kala Roni was shot dead in Rupsha last month. Sabbir was the main suspect in the crime. There are several other cases filed against him, including on charges of murder.
