Their involvement in the beating of a mentally ill youth is under investigation

A total of six students from Dhaka University have been sent to jail after confessing in court to their involvement in the murder of Toffazzal Hossain on suspicion of theft.
The 32-year-old Tofazzal, who reportedly had mental disabilities, was allegedly beaten at the university’s Fazlul Haque Muslim Hall on Wednesday night.
On Friday, Sub-Inspector Aminul Islam of Shahbagh Police Station presented the six students to the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrates Court around 12.30pm, where they voluntarily agreed to give their statements.
Later, at around 4:30pm, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Saddam Hossain began taking their confessions under Section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
The court concluded the proceedings around 8:15pm, ordering the students into jail.
Magistrate Saddam arrived at the court at around 2pm.
He explained the implications of the confessional statements to the students and allowed them several hours to consider their decision before proceeding.
The students are Md Jalal Mia, 25, a former deputy science and technology secretary of the Fazlul Haque Hall branch of Chhatra League and a physics student, along with Suman Mia, 21, from the soil, water, and environment department, Md Mottakin Sakin of the Institute of Nutrition and Food Science, Al Hossain Sajjad of geography, Ahsan Ullah from the mathematics department, and another student, Wajibul Alam, from the same hall.
