A supplementary agreement has been signed between state-owned flag carrier Biman Bangladesh Airlines and US aircraft manufacturer Boeing to buy 11 more aircraft.
The agreement was signed at a ceremony held on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly session in New York on Wednesday, according to a Biman media statement.
Biman Chairman Rumee A Hossain and Boeing Senior Vice President of Commercial Sales and Marketing Brad McMullen signed the agreement on behalf of their respective organisations.
The signing ceremony was attended by Bangladesh's Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister M Rashiduzzaman Millat, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir, Invest Bangladesh Chairman Ashik Chowdhury, Advisor to the Prime Minister Mahdi Amin, US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick and US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau.
Also present were US Under Secretary of Commerce William Kimmitt, Boeing Global Senior Vice President Brendan Nelson, Boeing Commercial Airplanes President and CEO Stephanie Pope, US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia S Paul Kapoor, and Boeing Commercial Airplanes Vice President of Commercial Sales and Marketing for Eurasia, India and South Asia Paul Rigi.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Rumee said: “Today’s supplementary agreement is an important step in Biman’s ongoing fleet modernisation and network expansion programme. This purchase order has been placed in light of the specific requirements of our fleet plan.
“The effective and mutually beneficial relationship we have had with Boeing over the years has given us confidence in the delivery of aircraft and subsequent support management.”
He said, “As the national flag carrier, we are committed to developing Biman’s network and capabilities to meet the growing connectivity needs of the people living in Bangladesh, expatriate Bangladeshis, businessmen and tourists.
“This agreement has been executed as part of a comprehensive and well-planned long-term plan to further strengthen the country’s international air connectivity in the coming years.”
According to the airline, this new agreement will help increase Biman's operational capacity, flexibility, and efficiency. The deal will also help maintain the necessary compatibility and continuity with the existing Boeing fleet.
Biman will also regularly review its fleet and network requirements in the future in line with national priorities, applicable laws and regulations and the developments in the global aviation sector, the state-owned company says.
On Sept 1, US President Donald Trump wrote a letter to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman thanking him for agreeing to buy Boeing aircraft.
In the letter, Trump also expressed his hope to meet Tarique soon.
Then, on Sept 8, Information Advisor Zahed Ur Rahman said, “Since we have been operating Boeing for a long time, we have a lot of Boeing’s supporting staff, which is quite prepared and trained; that is why we tend to choose Boeing more frequently.”
Previously, Biman had signed an agreement with the US company on Apr 30 to buy 14 Boeing aircraft.
The cost of buying these aircraft will be $3.7 billion dollars or Tk 454.08 billion (at an exchange rate of $1 to Tk 122.73).
Boeing will supply these aircraft to Biman in stages between 2031 and 2035.
In total, 25 Boeing aircraft are being added to Biman’s fleet.
