Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus is set to travel to the United Kingdom for a five-day state visit.
The head of the interim government and his entourage will fly out to London in an Emirates Airlines flight at 7:30pm on Monday, Deputy Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad Majumder told Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS).
Acting Foreign Secretary Ruhul Alam Siddique had previously shared the trip's itinerary at a press briefing on Jun 4.
During the visit, Yunus will hold bilateral talks with British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, he said. UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy, along with other senior ministers, political leaders, and influential figures from the policy and business communities are expected to meet the chief advisor.
Yunus will also take part in a special meeting at Chatham House, also known as the Royal Institute of International Affairs, on Jun 11. He will share his experience and perspective about the current reality, future opportunities and challenges in Bangladesh during the meeting.
Ruhul Alam said that in recognition of his global contributions, Yunus has been nominated by King Charles III for the 'King Charles III Harmony Award 2025', honouring his lifelong work to promote peace, sustainability, and harmony between people and the environment.
“The award will be conferred at a formal ceremony at St James’s Palace in London on Jun 12.”
Established in 1990, The King’s Foundation, a UK-based charity founded by Charles, then Prince of Wales, bestows the prestigious award annually on individuals with exemplary achievements in sustainable development and humanitarian causes.
Former UN secretary general Ban Ki-moon received the award in 2024.
The acting foreign secretary said The King's Foundation organised a special dinner on the evening of Jun 11, to mark its 35th anniversary. Yunus is also expected to attend the dinner.
During the visit, the chief advisor is also scheduled to have courtesy meetings with the secretaries-general of the Commonwealth and the International Maritime Organization.
His Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam said that Yunus will be accompanied by Bangladesh Bank Governor Ahsan H Mansur and Anti-Corruption Commission Chairman Abdul Momen on the visit.
The Chief Advisor's Office said a special focus of the visit will be on the UK's support for Bangladesh's democratic transition. In addition, Bangladesh will prioritise the issue of bringing back laundered money.
The chief advisor is scheduled to return home on Jun 14.
