Five Bangladeshi students have been expelled from Assam's National Institute of Technology Silchar for a year on charges of alleged drug abuse and assault.

Indian media outlet NDTV reports that these students were enrolled at the institution with scholarships from the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR).

The NITS authorities decided to expel the five students in the wake of an incident on Sept 8, when some third-year students attacked other Bangladeshi students of the same institution.

NDTV reported that the suspects were allegedly under the influence of drugs at the time of the incident.

The attackers assaulted the final-year students using rods, knives and screwdrivers, leaving some of them gravely injured.

Several of the injured students were admitted to Silchar Medical College Hospital, where two of them required treatment in the intensive care unit (ICU).
