Dhaka, July 18 (bdnews24.com) -- National Fisheries Week begins on Wednesday with a target to produce 3.5 million tonnes of fish by the end of 2013 and 4.2 million tonnes by the end of 2021.
Prime minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to inaugurate the programme at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the city at 10am.
Later, she will release fry in a pond of her official residence Ganabhaban.
The week will be observed from July 20 to 26 to ensure the maximum utilisation of fish resources and production of healthier fish.
The theme of the Fisheries Week 2011 is 'Produce safe fish to change Bangladesh'.
The fisheries and livestock ministry will provide all types of support in this regard.
A colourful rally will be taken out in Dhaka on Tuesday morning.
Fisheries and livestock minister Abdul Latif Biswas will announce various programmes at a press conference at 'Matsya Bhaban' on Tuesday at 4pm.
The other programmes marking the National Fisheries Week include release of fry, boat rallies, workshops, fish fairs, field-level rallies and processions, publications of supplementary in national dailies, aiming to create awareness among the people, telecast of various programmes, including talk-shows, in different television channels, and essay writing and painting competitions for the students.
