A case has been filed in Gopalganj over an attack on police personnel and the torching of police vehicles.

The case names 75 individuals and accuses 450 to 500 unidentified people of involvement in the incident.

Mir Mohammad Sajedur Rahman, chief of Gopalganj Sadar Police Station, said the case was filed in the wee hours of Friday by Inspector Ahmed Ali of Gopinathpur Police Station in Gopalganj Sadar Upazila.

According to police, the incident occurred on Wednesday morning in the Ulpur area of Gopalganj Sadar Upazila, along the Gopalganj-Tekerhat regional road, where police personnel had been deployed to provide security for a march organised by the National Citizen Party (NCP).

A group of people, allegedly led by Ataur Rahman Piyal, general secretary of the banned Awami League affiliate Chhatra League, attacked policemen on duty.

The attackers reportedly beat several policemen and vandalised and set fire to police vehicles.

Five members of the police, including Ali, were injured.

The case lists 75 named individuals, including Piyal and Newton Mollah, the district president of Chhatra League, according to the Gopalganj Sadar police chief.
