The family of Sharif Osman Hadi, the Inqilab Moncho convenor who died after being shot in Dhaka, has called for a memorial to be built in his honour at Shahbagh.
After news of Hadi's death broke on Thursday, relatives gathered at his family home in Jhalakathi's Nalchity on Friday. Several family members and supporters were seen breaking down in tears as they recalled his life and work.
They also demanded that those responsible for his killing be brought to justice and given exemplary punishment.
Speaking to journalists, Hadi's brother-in-law Amir Hossain Howlader said the family wanted his legacy to be formally recognised.
“Hadi rose to prominence at Shahbagh. A memorial should be built for him there.”
He also called for Hadi’s poetry to be included in school textbooks, and for his biography to be taught at schools and colleges.
Hadi was shot at close range on Dec 12 while travelling by rickshaw in Dhaka's Bijoynagar. Police said two assailants arrived on a motorcycle, opened fire and fled the scene.
He was initially taken in critical condition to Dhaka Medical College Hospital before being transferred to Evercare Hospital, where he was treated in intensive care.
On Dec 15, Hadi was flown to Singapore by air ambulance for advanced medical treatment. He later died there.
