Habiba went to pick up her daughter from school. She was killed when a plane crashed into it

“We eat together every afternoon. Yesterday, my daughter came home, but [my wife] didn’t,” her husband says

Umme Habiba Rajni, who hailed from Meherupur’s Gangni Upazila, had gone to bring her daughter home from school. She was killed when a plane crashed into the Milestone School and College in Dhaka’s Diabari.

The School Para area of Baot village in Gangni Upazila was filled with the laments of family, friends and local residents when Habiba’s body arrived in the area around 4am on Tuesday.

Her husband Zahurul Islam said her body was taken to Sajipur village in Kushtia’s Daulatpur Upazila and buried near her in-laws’ house at 9am.

Habiba, 37, is the daughter of Motmura Union BNP leader Abdul Hamid. She lived with her husband in a home in Dhaka’s Uttara Sector-4. Zahurul works at a private company and also runs a tiles business.

Their only daughter , 12-year-old Jhumjhum Khatun , is a student in fifth grade at Milestone School and College.

Zahurul said, “Habiba finished cooking and, before she left for Milestone School around 1pm on Monday to get our daughter, she said we would eat together once they got back. We eat together every afternoon. Yesterday, my daughter came home, but [my wife] didn’t.”

“Habiba was severely burnt when a training aircraft crashed as she was waiting for her daughter. She was taken to the burn unit at Dhaka’s CMH (Combined Military Hospital), where she died while undergoing treatment. Now we are distraught by the dining table at home.”

He said that while Jhumjhum was seriously injured in the disaster, but survived. She received first aid.

Grief has overwhelmed the home of Habiba’s parents in Baot village. Neighbours described her as a very affectionate and kind-hearted woman. They say her tragic death has left deep scars on their hearts.

Bonni Israfil, chief of Gangni Police Station, said the body of a person killed in the Milestone School and College disaster was brought in an ambulance to the area. Additional police personnel were deployed to ensure that the funeral was held without disruption.
