A Swechchhasebak Dal leader has died in a clash between two factions of BNP’s volunteer wing in Cumilla’s Nangalkot Upazila.
The incident occurred at Bangadda Bazar in the Upazila’s Bangadda union around 3pm on Saturday, Nangalkot Police Station chief AK Fazlul Haque said.
The deceased, Md Selem Bhuiyan, 45, was the president of Swechchhasebak Dal’s Heshakhal unit.
Witnesses informed that BNP’s Nangalkot Upazila unit President Mobasher Alam Bhuiyan had called a rally at Bangadda Bazar in the afternoon. The clash broke out between the leaders and activists of the party’s two factions when a convoy of former BNP lawmaker Abdul Gafur Bhuiyan was passing through there, leaving Selim dead.
Several other people have suffered injuries in the skirmish. However, their identities could not be determined.
Swechchhasebak Dal members claimed that Selim was a supporter of Gafur.
Mobasher did not respond to bdnews24.com’s call in this regard.
The victim’s body has been kept at the hospital, OC Fazlul said.
