The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) has said two suspects in the murder of Inqilab Moncho leader Sharif Osman bin Hadi have been detained by West Bengal Police in India based on "defence intelligence”.
In a media statement issued on Sunday, the ISPR said the process of extraditing the duo to Bangladesh has already "commenced”.
Earlier that day, Indian media outlets -- citing a bulletin from the West Bengal Police Special Task Force (STF) -- reported the arrests of Faisal Karim Masud and his accomplice, motorcycle driver Alamgir Hossain.
While Dhaka police had asserted nearly two and a half months ago that the pair were hiding in India, Indian authorities had issued a strenuous denial.
On Dec 28, sixteen days after Hadi was shot, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police claimed that the principal accused, Faisal and Alamgir, were residing in Meghalaya.
Facing these claims, Indian authorities stated categorically at the time that Faisal was not in their country.
According to the ISPR statement, the suspects have been identified as 37-year-old Rahul, alias Faisal Karim from Patuakhali and 34-year-old Alamgir from Dhaka.
"Information from multiple sources indicates that following a recent visit to India by a high-ranking officer from Bangladesh's defence intelligence agency, Indian authorities are taking a harder line against terrorists who have fled from Bangladesh."
According to a report by the news agency ANI, the men were detained on Saturday night in Bongaon.
The STF said the operation was based on "secret and credible" intelligence suggesting that two Bangladeshi nationals, wanted for serious crimes including extortion and murder, had infiltrated India.
The suspects were reportedly seeking refuge in Bongaon to slip back into Bangladesh when the opportunity arose.
During initial interrogation, the STF found that Faisal and Alamgir had fled to India after the killing of Hadi.
They reportedly entered illegally via the Meghalaya border and moved across several locations in India before arriving in Bongaon.
A case has been registered, and the suspects were remanded into police custody following a court appearance on Sunday.
Hadi was shot on Dec 12, a day after the election schedule in Bangladesh was announced, in front of the Bijoynagar water tank in Dhaka.
A video from the time showed two men arriving on a motorcycle and shooting Hadi in the head at close range. He later died on Dec 19 while undergoing treatment in Singapore.
