A mother has filed a case against a teacher at the Old Dhaka campus of private Oxford International School, alleging that her daughter was confined to a classroom and subjected to physical and mental abuse.
Police said the teacher, Tasnim Azad Supti, has been on the run since the incident.
The school authorities have acknowledged the allegations and said they have already dismissed her.
The case filed with Gandaria Police states that the incident took place on Aug 30.
Two or three other people have also been named as unidentified suspects.
Police Sub-Inspector Sohanur Rahman of the prosecution section said the case documents reached the court on Sept 12.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Hasan Shahadat has ordered the police to submit a report by Oct 14.
The child gave an account of the incident before Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Israt Jahan on Sept 22. Police have yet to arrest anyone in the case.
Investigation Officer Bipasha Kundu said CCTV footage had been obtained and also showed the alleged abuse.
“We have obtained the CCTV footage, where the abuse can also be seen. The accused is absconding and efforts are under way to arrest her. We have also sent a requisition to the SRB. We hope to arrest her soon,” she said.
What the Mother Says
The child's mother Afrina Hasnat said her daughter had turned towards the back of the bench to put away her lunchbox when Supti entered the classroom.
“That was my daughter's crime,” she said, adding that the teacher made the girl stand and told the students to write the meanings of several words from the board in their exercise books.
According to Afrina, the teacher would not allow her daughter to write and took away her notebook whenever she tried. The girl then took another student's notebook and secretly began writing while standing.
Supti then instructed her to put the notebook in her schoolbag, the mother said. When the girl continued writing, the teacher pressed a pencil against her hand, leaving it red, Afrina alleged.
Afrina said her daughter later began copying the classwork onto a blank sheet from her book because she needed to show her studies to her mother that night.
“She became aggressive when she saw this. She sent the other students out of the classroom, locked the classroom and threatened my daughter in different ways. She snatched the blank sheet and tore it into pieces. She made my daughter stand throughout the class,” the mother said.
Afrina alleged that the girl was kept inside the classroom even after the school bell rang.
“She stood there, took back the notebook that had been confiscated and started writing. Supti then approached my daughter with a pencil and said, ‘I will take out your eye’, before poking her below the right eye and causing a bleeding injury,” she said.
The girl became so frightened that she urinated on herself, Afrina said, alleging that the teacher continued to abuse her.
The child later reported the incident to the campus administrator Ishana, who is known by a single name, following which Supti allegedly threatened her, the mother said.
School's Response
Campus Vice-Principal Ruhul Amin said the teacher was dismissed within 72 hours of the school learning about the incident.
“The incident can be seen in the CCTV footage. The child was made to stand for 47 minutes. That alone was enough to terminate her,” he said.
Gandaria Police visited the campus, and the school cooperated with the investigation, he said.
“We provided them with everything they asked for,” Ruhul said.
He said the school authorities, including its chairman and managing director, had apologised to the child's mother when they met her over the incident.
“She understood the matter, but still filed the case. We dismissed the teacher and did not hide anything,” he said.
Ruhul said the school considered the child very talented and hoped for her to return.
“She is a very talented child, and a lot can be expected from her. We have contacted her mother to bring her back to school,” he said.
