A mobile court has seized nearly 5,000kg of rice found in 140 sacks belonging to the government’s Food Friendly programme that were being sold at a store a short distance away from food warehouses in Brahmanbaria’s Nasirnagar. Another 150 empty sacks have also been found.
The rice was seized in a raid in the Mohakhalpara area of the Upazila Sadar around 11:30pm on Monday night, according to Nasirnagar Upazila Administrator (UNO) Shaheena Nasrin.
The police also detained two workers from the store. They were identified as Shaha Kamal Mia and Jewel Mia, both of whom hailed from the Upazila. They were working to remove the rice from the store.
The store’s owners were identified as local businessmen Motahar Mia and Rahmat Ali.
UNO Shaheena said the government had recently started distributing rice under a Food Friendly programme through special cards for the extremely poor and those with low income. This rice has been allocated to about 11,000 beneficiaries in Nasirnagar.
However, before the distribution started, 140 government-sealed bags of rice and about 150 empty bags were recovered from the shop.
Md Monirul Islam, the officer in charge of the food warehouse, said: “Regular dealers are taking rice from our warehouse and it is being distributed to the beneficiaries through them. The shopkeepers and the dealers concerned know very well how these government bags came to the shops.”
Md Abul Hossain, an official for the Upazila Food Controller, said: “I cannot say anything right now. I will provide details once I reach the office.”
