Another shooting has occurred in Dhaka’s Pallabi in the span of two weeks. Two people have now been injured in a drive-by shooting.

The attack was due to a prior dispute over drug trafficking, police say.

Hasan Bashir, chief of Pallabi Police Station, said: “Three rounds of ammunition have been fired targeting an individual named Alamgir Hossain (45) from a moving vehicle in Pallabi’s Millat Camp No. 2 around 5:45pm on Friday. A pedestrian named Josna Begum, who was crossing the road, was also shot.

“Police inspected the scene after the accident and, in addition to collecting CCTV footage from nearby, have started working to identify those involved.”

A police officer from Pallabi Police Station told bdnews24.com that they initially learned that the attack took place around 5:30pm on Friday in front of Emon's tea shop in the Block-B, Line-2 area of Section-11 due to a previous dispute over drug trafficking.

According to information available to the police, “Langra Rubel” (Lame Rubel), a known criminal in the area, and his associate Bappa, drove by in a private car and opened fire on Alamgir.

Alamgir was hit twice in the head and stomach. Another shot fired as he was running away from the attack hit pedestrian Josna in the right leg.

The injured Alamgir was first taken to a local hospital before doctors there sent him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where he’s undergoing treatment. Josna has been admitted to Kurmitola General Hospital.

The police official also said that three bullet shells were recovered from the scene. CCTV footage from the area has been collected and is being reviewed.

Investigators have also obtained information about the car used in the attack. A drive is under way to arrest those involved, and a case is being processed at Pallabi Police Station.

Meanwhile, a policeman at the scene said that a man named Ashiq, who introduced himself as Alamgir's uncle, took him to DMCH.

When contacted, Ashiq told bdnews24.com: "I am talking to the doctor. I cannot say anything now."

Previously, Jubo Dal activist Yusuf was shot dead by hired shooters in Kafrul last month. The Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch (DB) and police from Mirpur Police Station arrested eight people from different parts of the country on charges of involvement in the incident.

The arrested are Chanchal, Jihad Mollah, Ziarul Mollah, Masum Billah, Nahid Hasan, Abir Hawlader, Ali Hossain, and Shafin Ahmed.

The DB, investigating the incident, said Hafizur Rahman Hafiz alias CNG Hafiz, the joint convenor of the Kafrul Thana Swechhashebok Dal, had hired a shooter to kill Hafizul Islam Babu, the member secretary of the Kafrul Thana Jubo Dal.

While Babu survived the attack, Yusuf was killed in the shooting. Vegetable vendors Nalam Sardar and Monir Hossain were injured in the incident.

According to the DB, the shooters brought from outside Dhaka were hired for Tk 2.5 million to carry out the entire attack. Four of the arrestees opened fire directly, while the rest played the role of accomplices.

At the time, DMP Additional Police Commissioner and DB chief Shafiqul Islam said: “The plan to kill Hafizul Islam Babu was based on disputes over a local power struggle, garbage tenders, the sidewalk business, land grabbing and the upcoming councillor elections. As part of the agreement, a portion of Tk 2.5 million was paid in advance and other expenses, including the food and lodging of the shooters, was also paid for.

“Although the first plan was to kill Babu on Jun 29, the attack could not be carried out due to a misfire while loading the weapon. Later, on Jul 22, the suspect came back to Dhaka and checked into a hotel in Mirpur-2. The next night, they positioned themselves in front of Babu’s office and prepared for the attack.”

However, police have yet to confirm the reason behind the attack in Pallabi on Friday. DMP Mirpur Division Deputy Commissioner Mostak Sarkar said, “We have been able to identify the shooter. He has committed another such incident in the span of two weeks. He will be brought to justice very soon.”
