The Rapid Action Battalion, or RAB, has arrested Dilip Kumar Agarwala, the managing director of Diamond World Ltd.
He was apprehended in Dhaka’s Gulshan-1 area on Tuesday midnight, the elite force said in a statement.
The entrepreneur was one of the suspects named in a case filed at Badda Police Station over the murder of a person named Hridoy Ahmed during the recent Anti-discrimination Student Movement on Jul 19.
In addition, Agarwala is a member of Awami League’s central industry and commerce committee, according to a source.
Earlier in the evening, the Criminal Investigation Department, or CID, said in a statement that the agency’s financial crime unit had launched an investigation into the allegation of diamond and gold smuggling against Agarwala.
The CID also started investigating allegations of money laundering and fraud against Agarwala under the guise of importing gold and diamonds through smuggling from abroad.
He also faces allegations of controlling smuggling syndicates in Dubai and Singapore.
In addition, there are allegations that he owns three jewellery shops in India’s Kolkata; 11 houses and huge illegal assets in Malaysia, Dubai, and Canada; and illegally became a bank director by investing Tk 400 million through fraud, the CID said.
