The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has forecast moderate to very heavy rain in parts of the Dhaka, Chattogram, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions.
Meteorologist AKM Nazmol Haque said on Sunday afternoon: “There is a possibility of moderate to heavy, and sometimes very heavy, rain in all districts of Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions at any time.
“Similar rain is also likely in Cumilla, Noakhali and Chattogram districts of Chattogram Division, and Narsingdi and Narayanganj districts in the eastern part of Dhaka Division. Barishal Division may see relatively less rain. There is also a possibility of light to moderate rain in Khulna Division.”
The BMD’s forecast for the 120 hours from 9am on Sunday said a low-pressure area extended from West Bengal to the north Bay of Bengal.
Under its influence, light to moderate rain or thundershowers, accompanied by temporary gusty or squally winds and lightning, may occur in many places in Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions, and in some places in Rangpur and Rajshahi divisions.
Moderate to heavy, or even very heavy, rain may also occur in some places in Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram divisions, the Met Office said.
Daytime temperatures may remain largely unchanged across the country during this period, while night temperatures may rise slightly.
In a special warning for river ports, the BMD said westerly or northwesterly winds of 45-60kph may sweep over Dhaka, Faridpur, Jashore, Kushtia, Khulna, Barishal, Patuakhali, Noakhali, Cumilla, Chattogram and Cox’s Bazar regions until 6pm on Sunday.
The winds may be accompanied by rain or thunderstorms with temporary gusts or squalls.
River ports in these areas have been asked to hoist cautionary signal No. 1.
Sandwip recorded the highest rainfall in the country in the 24 hours to 6am on Sunday. Dhaka received 28mm of rain during the same period.
